Conversations From The Bench is a collaborative web-video series addressing important social justice issues in a participatory documentary format. Placed on the street by the filmmakers, the bench is utilized as a device to establish an intentional space for open discussions and interviews with passers-by. Much like the proverbial “talking stick“, the bench acts as a space for discourse, granting whoever is seated on it the license to explore issues that normally would not be discussed.
The first three episodes are a collaboration between students from University of Pennsylvania and West Philadelphia High School. Topics for the first three episodes were generated by the students and include: street harassment (“catcalling”), body image, and relationships between genders.
